Airpower and The Iraqi Offensive at Khafji
Since the end of the Gulf War, we have almost forgotten the larger meaning of a
pivotal clash between Iraqi and Coalition forces near the town of Khafji, Saudi Arabia.
During the night of January 29th, 1991, the Iraqi Army launched elements of three
divisions toward the Saudi border in an apparent attempt to cause Coalition casualties
and start the ground war early. Coalition airpower detected and attacked Iraqi
forces and halted the drive.
IRIS Independent Research published Airpower and the Iraqi Offensive at Khafji in 1997.
This CD-ROM, created for the Air Force Studies and Analyses Agency (AFSAA), demonstrates
what airmen have known for a long time: that airpower can provide the heavy punch
needed to stop enemy armored thrusts dead in their tracks.
