Untying the Bloody Scarf
By Christopher J. Bowie
In times of ever-shrinking defense budgets and ever-increasing security commitments,
the U.S. defense community must learn to "do more with less." In this intriguing
report, author Christopher Bowie argues that stealth, (the employment of low observable
and other technologies to render an aircraft less visible to enemy radar), is the
key to accomplishing this.
High loss of aircrew and aircraft in past wars led to an increasing amount
of force protection support to attacking air formations. This support in
turn dilutes the effectiveness of airpower. Stealth offers the opportunity
to reduce or eliminate the need for these support forces. In so doing, it
changes the rules of the game and offers truly revolutionary increases in
both operational and cost effectiveness.
This 18-page booklet uses case studies from World War II to the 1995
Bosnian air campaign, along with numerous charts and graphs, to promote
the use of stealth technology.
